History of the Tom Collins Gin Cocktail
The Tom Collins gin cocktail is believed to have originated in the 19th century, with two competing stories about its name. One theory links it to a hoax in 1874, where people were sent on a wild goose chase asking for "Tom Collins," prompting a bartender to create a drink with that name. Another theory ties it to an earlier cocktail called the John Collins, made with Old Tom Gin at Limmer’s Old House in London, which may have led to the name change. Regardless of its origins, the Tom Collins was first published in Jerry Thomas' Bar-Tender’s Guide in 1876 and became a timeless gin classic.
