  1. Build the Base: Add the Signature Gin, sugar syrup, lemon juice and 9 basil leaves to a shaker.
  2. Release the Flavours: Muddle the basil leaves in the shaker to infuse.
  3. Bring the Chill: Add ice to the shaker and shake until the outside becomes frosty.
  4. Strain: Double-strain ingredients into a pre-chilled glass.
  5. Final Touch: Garnish with a sprig of 3 basil leaves.

History of the Gin Basil Smash

The Gin Basil Smash was created in 2008 by Joerg Meyer, owner of Le Lion Bar in Hamburg, Germany. Inspired by the Whiskey Smash he tried in New York, and a basil garnish he noticed in a cocktail booklet, Meyer experimented with fresh basil, lemon, and gin to create a bright, herbaceous drink. Originally called the Gin Pesto, it was later renamed the Gin Basil Smash and gained quick popularity for its unique flavour and vibrant green colour. With help from social media, word of mouth, and Meyer’s storytelling, the cocktail became a modern classic, beloved across Germany and beyond.
