History of the Dark and Stormy Gin Cocktail
The Dark ‘n’ Stormy, Bermuda’s iconic highball gin cocktail, blends spicy ginger beer and Gosling’s Black Seal dark rum. The drink’s name is said to come from a sailor who compared its murky colour to storm clouds. Its roots trace back to 1806, when the Gosling family arrived in Bermuda and later began producing their signature rum in 1857. Combined with ginger beer, a favourite British beverage also made on the island, the Dark ‘n’ Stormy was born. Today, it’s the go-to drink for sailors and mariners worldwide, symbolising Bermuda’s rich maritime history.
